The Manhattan Project’s Hidden Cities: Oak Ridge, Hanford and Los Alamos

The project was not one laboratory but a vast compartmented network whose three principal sites performed different jobs.

A secret system at national scale

The Manhattan Project was a top-secret U.S. wartime program to develop atomic weapons. The National Park Service describes a national mobilization involving more than 130,000 people and many sites, coordinated through the Army Corps of Engineers. Three places now anchor Manhattan Project National Historical Park: Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Hanford, Washington; and Los Alamos, New Mexico. They were connected but not interchangeable. Oak Ridge concentrated on uranium enrichment, Hanford produced plutonium, and Los Alamos designed and assembled weapons. Understanding that division makes the vast project more legible than the familiar image of a few physicists in one remote room.

Oak Ridge and uranium

Oak Ridge grew around multiple approaches to separating uranium isotopes, a process requiring extraordinary industrial scale because uranium-235 forms only a small fraction of natural uranium. The Army acquired a large Tennessee site with access to power and water and constructed facilities whose purposes were compartmented. Many workers performed precise jobs without being told the final objective. The project’s footprint displaced existing communities and transformed a rural area into a controlled city. Any celebration of engineering speed has to share space with those land, labor and secrecy histories.

Hanford and plutonium

Hanford’s role centered on reactors and chemical plants for producing and separating plutonium. Its Washington location offered water, electricity and geographic isolation, but the selection also led to displacement and long environmental consequences. The B Reactor reached criticality in 1944, and plutonium from Hanford was used in the Trinity device and the bomb detonated over Nagasaki. The preserved site therefore connects scientific achievement to weapons use and to the difficult cleanup legacy of plutonium production. A source-led visual history should show infrastructure and landscape, not only leaders’ portraits.

Los Alamos and weapon design

Los Alamos brought together weapon design, theoretical work, experimentation and assembly under J. Robert Oppenheimer’s scientific leadership and General Leslie Groves’s military direction. The laboratory had to translate fissile material from the production sites into workable designs. The plutonium route required an implosion design tested at Trinity on July 16, 1945. The uranium weapon used over Hiroshima followed another design path. Naming these differences prevents ‘the atomic bomb’ from becoming one undifferentiated object and helps readers follow why the project pursued multiple expensive technical approaches at once.

Secrecy, labor and displacement

Secrecy worked through guards, restricted geography, censorship, classification and compartmentalization. It was never absolute: espionage occurred, workers noticed unusual conditions, and entire communities knew they were part of an urgent war industry even when the mission was concealed. The scale makes the secrecy remarkable but should not be romanticized. Thousands of people—women, Black workers, military personnel, scientists, construction crews and displaced residents—experienced the project from unequal positions. How to read the preserved landscape

Visit the NPS overview first, then move through the official timeline and site-specific histories. Use image captions to retain creator and rights information; many government-era photographs are public domain, while partner or modern images may have different status. Read the landscape at three scales: the national network, each city’s technical role, and the individual workplace. Finally, connect 1945 to the enduring nuclear age—bombings, Cold War production, environmental remediation and public memory. The park’s purpose is not to provide a single moral verdict but to preserve places where those consequences can be confronted together.

The official project timeline runs from the discovery of fission and the 1939 warning to Roosevelt through wartime construction, Trinity, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, surrender and the transfer of nuclear work to the Atomic Energy Commission. A timeline is useful only when it does not imply inevitability. At several points, technical choices, military decisions and political judgments remained choices. Site interpretation should therefore pair dates with decision-makers, affected communities and alternatives visible in the record, allowing the scale of achievement and destruction to remain in the same frame.
